NIC EIC

NIC EIC

NICEIC’s Approved Contractor Scheme is designed to maintain and publish a register of electrical contractors that have been assessed against a specific set of competency requirements, in particular the national electrical safety standard BS 7671 the IEE Wiring Regulations.

The register of contractors is formally known as the Roll of Approved Contractors and is operated by NICEIC under license from the Electrical Safety Council. The aim of the Roll is to promote the use of competent persons and provide users of contracting services with a single source directory of competent contractor

Registered contractors will work to the UK national standard, BS 7671, and will issue a safety certificate for their electrical work to confirm that the installation has been designed, constructed, inspected and tested in accordance with the standard.

The NICEIC Approved Contractor Scheme is accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) to EN 45011 - General requirements for bodies operating product certification systems. Accreditation ensures that the scheme is operated with independence and integrity and that it focuses on the quality and safety of the final installation.

Part P Approved Contractor

Part P The specific section of the Building Regulations for England and Wales that relates to electrical installations in domestic properties. Part P provides safety regulations to protect householders, and requires most domestic electrical work to be carried out by government-registered electricians, or to be inspected by Building Control officers.

Statutory Regulation

Regulation has finally hit electrical contracting in dwellings. Electricians are now not only expected to know the requirements of BS 7671 for electrical installations but also requirements of Part P of the Building Regulations. But it doesn’t stop there. They need a good understanding of those other requirements of the Building Regulations that impact upon electrical installations (this is not new). Although the owner/developer has prime responsibility for ensuring compliance with all aspects of the building regulations in a new property or a refurbished property, customers will expect the electrician to know enough about the Building Regulations to keep them on the straight and narrow. Not only will electrical contractors have to understand limitations on notching and drilling joists, chasing walls, provision of smoke alarms, accessibility for people with disabilities etc., but also the requirements of a range of Office of the Deputy Prime Minister approved documents.
